American Portraits/New Racial ID Series I'm working on.

I'm starting a new series of paintings that are about being mixed racially and ethnically in the south. The self portrait is my first venture. I want to paint in pastel super realistic portraits of me, my sister, my parents and others holding photo's of themselves or other family members.

What hit me off to do this is a long simmering anger. Although I was lucky enough to grow up in a generation that didn't care and was open minded enough to think it is okay to have a diverse background, my parents were not.

Another thing that sparked me off was a couple of months ago a so called "preacher" came into my gallery angry that our outside sign said "Holiday Sale" instead of what he said should say "Christmas Sale". He spouted off about Jews never spend money at Christmas time, that President Obama was trying to turn All American's into Muslims and a lot of other shit that really pissed me off. (This isn't the first time I've had this happen.)

It dawned on me that this guy assumed that I would agree with him because I look white and that I must be a Christian like him...all assumptions are wrong. I don't agree with him, I'm only part white and I am not a Christian. I'm American.

So I started thinking about identity and assumptions...and generations of people who fear change and differences. I don't know where this will lead...hopefully to a better place.

Altered Series

For sometime now I have been creating the Altered Series, a volume of books based on the Jack the Ripper Murders in Whitechapel, London, England. I am planning on having the first volume published this summer or possibly this fall. The first volume will cover Questionable Jack the Ripper Victims such as Martha Tabram to two of the first Canonical (Generally Accepted) Victims Mary Ann Nichols and Annie Chapman.

The Second volume of Altered will deal with The Double event (the murders of Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes) with other the murders such as The Whitehall Mystery (the discovery of a woman's torso found in a cellar of the under construction Scotland Yard (now called the Norman Shaw Buildings).

The next volumes will cover the murders of Mary Kelly and other Questionable Jack the Ripper Victims.

The dark subject matter has given me many reasons to pause and think. And I confess, I have to take breaks from the horrors that were inflicted on the women of Whitechapel, whether they were victims or not.

Taxidermist/upholsterers knife. Many men worked as taxidermist and also worked as upholsterers in the Whitechapel area during the Victorian era. Many of the same knives and other tools were used in both profession's.

There is a lot of speculation as to what sort weapon or weapons Jack the Ripper may have used, one of these is the kukri or kukris. A lot of British soilders had kukris while they served in India in the 1800's. Many of these kukri found there way into the British market for anyone to purchase. The blade of a kuri is very strong and has a distinctive blade shape.
